Blast, Ballistic, and Forced-Entry-Resistant Operable Window System with Glazing

This window system and simplified installation method are designed to combine a high level of security with the benefits of full operability. It uses a compression frame in which both the interior and exterior frame assemblies can be sandwiched around an opening and compressed against the wall. This allows the window system to be securely fixed in a variety of conditions, including rough and non-plumb openings in walls of varying thicknesses, without being anchored to the wall. The frame includes multiple layers of gaskets and threaded sleeves for bolts, creating a secure seal between the window and the building. When closed and locked with a latch pin, the window system is designed to resist ballistic threats, blasts, and forced entry. During a blast, ballistic threat, or forced-entry attempt, the pressure applied to the window is distributed to the outer perimeter in contact with the wall, increasing the window’s resilience.
Traditional window systems typically provide either a high level of security with a fixed, sealed design that cannot be opened or a lower level of security with a structure that is easily opened and closed. This tradeoff means occupants of highly-secure buildings must often go without the benefits of operable windows, including not just ventilation and visibility but also the ability to escape or return fire. Upgrading existing buildings with secure windows—as in the example of retrofitting a hotel to serve as a consulate or ambassador residence—often requires significant structural modifications, as older buildings may have rough openings and non-uniform wall thicknesses.
